Serenity Inns Inc. is a comprehensive, seven month transitional living program for homeless men who choose recovery from drug and/or alcohol addictions. This program addresses the physical, social, emotional, financial, and spiritual needs of its residents. It is a highly structured program modeled after a program of recovery within the ministry of Shared Hope in Washington, D.C. - Samaritan Inns - that has been successfully operating for the past 30 years.

Serenity Inns provides a three-phase transitional program for individuals choosing recovery from their addictions. The first phase is Leadership Education Acceptance Program (LEAP). LEAP has proved to be highly effective in preparing individuals to be successful residents in phase two, the transitional living program (TLP). The goal of LEAP is to assist the individual in understanding himself and his addiction, in learning how to deal with that addiction, and in developing a commitment to recovery.

When staff determines that the individual is ready to enter phase two, a final week of LEAP is initiated. During this week, programming focuses on job preparedness, i.e., filling out job applications, participating in mock interviews, and job search "basics", including learning how to market oneself. Once this week is completed, the individual enters phase two. Phase two is the 6-month TLP which places significant emphasis on assisting residents in becoming better managers of their financial resources, learning basic life skills and healthy ways to live an independent life in recovery.

Upon graduating from the TLP, individuals enter phase three - the Independent Living Program. Residents receive assistance in making healthy and safe living arrangements, including furnishing their apartment once they move out. Serenity Inns has always provided follow-up services to graduates of the program.

Cries of our Society...

Serenity Inns
  • 1500 to 2000 persons are homeless in Milwaukee at any given time and more than 90% of these individuals have substance abuse problems.
  • An estimated 80% of the current 20,000+ inmates in the Wisconsin prison system are incarcerated because of drug related activities.
  • "Nationwide, 18 million Americans abuse or are addicted to alcohol. Each year there are more deaths and disabilities from substance abuse than from any other preventable cause."

Living in Community...
  • Residents become full participants in the common life and maintenance of the living environment.
  • Each resident must attend a 12-step program, work an entry-level job and pay 1/3 of their income for housing expenses.
  • A comprehensive support system includes health care, job counseling, addictions counseling, and a team of people dedicated to accompany each resident to recovery.
  • Connecting with a concerned larger community occurs at the evening meal served by volunteers. Weekly peer meetings give continued support and understanding.
